HOW TO REACH HVAR:

If you are travelling to Hvar you can't avoid travelling by boat. You can choose everything else though (plane, train, car, bus, motorcycle). Regardless of whether you travel by catamaran or the ferry boat, you will undoubtedly enjoy beautiful sea surrounding Hvar and the neighbouring islands during your fifty minute (by catamaran) or two hour long (ferry boat) trip.

BY BOAT:

Since the boat is your final 'obstacle' to reach your ultimate goal – Hvar, lets begin with the boat schedules.

First of all it's important to know that there are two ferry lines going to Hvar, both transport cars, as well as two catamaran lines. Ferries departing from Split arrive to Stari Grad, and the ones departing from Drvenik arrive to Sućuraj. Catamarans come directly to Hvar and Jelsa with departures from Split and Brač. Besides the regular lines going all year round there are some you can use only in the summer months. Such as the line Pescara-Stari Grad-Split, as well as the international line (two times a week) Ancona-Stari Grad-Split-Korčula. It's important to know that during summer the number of lines is increased if needed and it would be wise to check the schedule before starting your trip.

There is also the possibility of a private transfer organized by travel agencies or you can personally rent a private taxi speed boat.

While in Croatia you can find all the useful information about Croatian roads, traffic reports, tolls, etc on the official web site of the Croatian auto club (HAK www.hak.hr ). Next, depending on your final destination on the island choose whether to go to Split or Drvenik from where ferries depart for Hvar. Your choice of the ferry should depend, among other things, on which town on the island you want to go to. The header of this page contains a mini map of the island. Look into which port is closest to your final destination. Here is a few useful guidelines which should make this easier. If you are going towards Hvar from the direction of Monte Negro, Sarajevo, Dubrovnik, Neum, Makarska then your choice should be the ferry line Drvenik-Sućuraj. It's important to know that the road from Sućuraj to Jelsa is narrow and curvy. If you are approaching Hvar from the the north-west Croatia or Istria the right choice would be the ferry line Split-Stari Grad, although there are ferry lines that can take you and your vehicle directly from Rijeka to Stari Grad.
